Kevin floated in the neither here nor there waiting for the
final leg of the journey to be complete.
He looked through the portal, saw it was dark, but he could make out
grass and some darker shadows. Reaching
out his hand, he again encountered the solidity that prevented him from
slipping through.
“Damn it.” He
scrunched his eyes and rubbed his forehead in frustration. “Conductor, what is preventing transport?”
“Humanoid detected.”
The metallic voice droned, he still didn’t understand why the Primes never changed that.
“Deploy countermeasures.”
“Deployed… ineffective.”
“Release fear inducers”
“Ineffective.”
“Transmit danger enhancer.”
“Ineffective.”
Kevin slapped his thigh.
“Come on, I want to go home. It’s
been a long day.”
“Unable to comply.”
Grabbing the circular gateway globe on his neck, he
concentrated on the Prime. A miniature
of a woman appeared floating from the marble like pendant.
“Where’s Ventner.”
His voice was clipped and demanding.
“I can’t get through the portal.”
“It’s his turn to party.”
Her smirk lifted to the left as
her eyes narrowed. “You’re stuck with
me.”
“Who are you?” She
resembled Ventner, same blue eyes, same dark hair.
“I am Olien. I am the
First Triad.”
The First Triad? Shit, now he was in trouble. “Sorry, Ma’am. Uh, could you give me to you assistant? I’m sure you don’t want to deal with my
problem.
“Nonsense Kelgor, this is exactly the thing I do need to deal with.”
“Kevin.” He forced
through gritted teeth.
“Kelgor Hyatt from the planet Solgan.” She held his gaze. “You were brought on two hundred years ago, you
live on earth and like to go by the name Kevin.” Pointing her finger at him, then raising it
and ticking it back and forth. “You
can’t release your responsibilities to someone else. It’s your problem.”
“What?” Pointing to
the opening he raised his voice. “How is
an inoperative portal my responsibility?
“Have a nice
day.” She was gone.
Why did the Triad have
to rotate? The frustrated thought
flitted through his brain as he dropped the pendant down his shirt collar to
hang against his chest. He’d gotten used
to Ventner.
….To be continued….
